Frequently Asked Questions

Ferrochrome & Chromium Alloys — Common Questions

What is ferrochrome?

Ferrochrome (FeCr) is a ferroalloy composed primarily of iron and chromium, produced through the high-temperature reduction and smelting of chromite ore. It is one of the most important commercial forms in which chromium is supplied to the metallurgical industry.

What is Ultra Low Carbon Ferrochrome?

Ultra Low Carbon Ferrochrome (ULC FeCr) is a ferrochrome grade with very low carbon content. Indiano Chrome offers Indi-Ultra Chrome 800 (C 0.025% Max) and Indi-Ultra Chrome 5000 (C 0.03% Max). ULC FeCr is used where tight carbon limits are required in the final steel grade.

What is the purity of Indiano Chrome Metal?

Indiano Chrome's Indi-Chrome Metal 001 has a chromium content of 99% Min — India's first 99% purity chrome metal.

What is the difference between LC and HC ferrochrome?

The main difference is carbon content. LC FeCr generally contains significantly less carbon — typically under 0.5% depending on grade — while HC FeCr typically contains around 4–8% carbon. LC FeCr allows chromium to be added without significantly increasing the carbon content of the steel, making it useful where tight carbon limits are required.

Can chemistry and sizing be customized?

Yes. Indicative specifications are shown in the product portfolio table. Customized chemistry and sizing can be supplied subject to mutual technical agreement. Contact our technical team to discuss your specific requirements.

How is ferrochrome produced?

The production process involves reducing the chromium and iron oxides present in chromite ore at high temperatures, typically in an electric or submerged arc furnace. The resulting molten alloy is subsequently processed, cooled and sized into a form suitable for use by steelmakers.

Need a Specific Chromium Alloy Grade?
